The Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF-1) ruled unanimously that the family of Tancredo Neves may have access to sealed documents about the president-elect's hospitalization at Hospital de Base in Brasília, g1 reported. The decision was made this week.

Tancredo was hospitalized on the eve of his inauguration with diverticulitis and died on April 21, 1985, about a month later. To this day the case is surrounded by doubts and conspiracy theories, and the family wants to clarify suspicions of medical error.

Under the ruling, the Federal Council of Medicine and the Regional Council of Medicine of the Federal District must release medical records, the list of doctors and other documents. Contacted by g1, the bodies said they had not yet been officially notified.

The search for answers in court began after 2010, with the publication of the book "O paciente" by Luís Mir, who researched the case with the family's permission.

According to g1, the outcome could begin to settle questions about an episode that changed the course of national politics just after the country celebrated the election of its first civilian president after two decades of military rule.
